Andreas Flache is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Groningen, specializing in modeling social integration, cooperation, and social networks. He holds roles as Director of Research at the Department of Sociology and Scientific Director of the Interuniversity Center for Social Science Theory and Methodology (ICS). His work bridges computational modeling with empirical research, focusing on agent-based simulations, game theory, and social experiments.
Flache earned his PhD in Social and Behavioral Sciences from the University of Groningen (1996) after completing a Master’s in Computer Science at the University of Koblenz-Landau (1991). His research explores how social structures and interactions drive phenomena like polarization, segregation, and cooperative behavior. He has held significant grants, including an NWO-VIDI (2005-2010) and KNAW Fellowship (1999-2004).
Key research interests include the dynamics of opinion formation, the impact of social networks on collective action, and the interplay between cultural diversity and social cohesion. His findings have been published in top journals like Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Journal of Mathematical Sociology.
Flache’s contributions extend to interdisciplinary collaborations, such as modeling school segregation and analyzing community energy initiatives. He emphasizes the importance of connecting theoretical models with real-world data to address societal challenges like polarization and environmental sustainability.
His scientific accolades include the NWO-VIDI Grant and KNAW Fellowship, reflecting his impactful contributions to computational social science. Current projects focus on the complexities of social integration in diverse societies, leveraging agent-based models to simulate micro-macro linkages in opinion and behavioral dynamics.
