Andrea Sylvia Winkler is a Professor at the Department of Community Medicine and Global Health, Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo. She is also affiliated with the Institute of Health and Society and serves as Deputy Director of the Centre for Global Health. Additionally, she is Co-chair of the Lancet One Health Commission and leads the Munich Global Neurology Group at the Technical University of Munich. Her academic background includes a medical degree from Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich (1987–1994), an MD thesis in basic neurosciences (1989–1993, summa cum laude), a PhD in clinical neuroscience from King's College Hospital, London (1996–2000), and a Habilitation in Global Neurology/Global Health from Ludwig-Maximilians-University (2008–2012). She passed her specialist neurologist (Facharzt) exam in 2007.
Andrea Winkler’s research interests center on global health challenges, particularly poverty-related and zoonotic diseases affecting the central nervous system—such as neurocysticercosis—under the One Health framework. She is deeply engaged in global mental health in low-income countries, migrant medicine, tropical medicine, and palliative care. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration and capacity building in sub-Saharan Africa.
