Andrea Spagnoli is a Full Professor of Structural Mechanics at the University of Parma, Italy, within the College of Engineering and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He is the Director of the PhD programme in Civil Engineering and Architecture and has held visiting positions at Imperial College London, Kyushu University, University of Michigan, and Lund University. His academic leadership includes editorial board memberships and coordination of national and international research projects.
His research spans Structural Mechanics, Fracture and Fatigue of Materials, Contact Mechanics, Stability of Shell Structures, Mechanics of Advanced and Soft Materials, and Non-Destructive Structural Monitoring. He applies both theoretical and computational models to study nonlinear behavior in concrete, composites, rocks, and biological tissues. His recent work emphasizes soft materials and tissue mechanics.
The most recent publications (2024–2025) reveal a strong trend toward biomechanics, computational modeling of soft tissues, fiber dispersion in biological materials, and failure analysis of soft membranes. These works integrate advanced numerical techniques with experimental validation, particularly in the context of additive manufacturing and tissue engineering.
- Named in the 2023 Stanford University-Elsevier list of the World’s Top 2% Scientists
Prof. Spagnoli has coordinated a PRIN2009 project funded by the Italian Ministry of Education and participated in the H2020 SIRAMM twinning project (2019–2023). He has been a consistent contributor to international research collaborations, with academic visits to leading institutions. He supervises doctoral students through his role as PhD programme coordinator and likely mentors junior researchers, though specific students are not listed.
He is actively involved in professional societies, including serving as Secretary of the ESIS Technical Committee on Fatigue (2000–2019), a member of ECCS TWG 8.4 on steel shell stability, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Italian Group of Fracture (2011–2023). He also co-edited a book on multiaxial fatigue and special issues of Engineering Fracture Mechanics, and serves on the editorial boards of several high-impact journals.
