Andrea Rota is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Oslo's Department of Cultural Studies and Oriental Languages. Previously, he held positions as Assistant Professor at the University of Bern (2017-2023) and research roles at the University of Fribourg. His academic credentials include a Habilitation (2020) and PhD (2011) in Religious Studies from Swiss institutions, complemented by a Certificate in Higher Education from the University of Bern.
Rota's research examines contemporary religiosity with emphasis on:
- Religion-society interactions post-WWII
- Media adaptation by religious groups (particularly evangelicals and Jehovah's Witnesses)
- COVID-19's impact on religious/secular narratives
- 1960s academic-religious innovation connections
- Theoretical frameworks including collective intentionality and emic-etic distinctions
His publications demonstrate consistent focus on religion-media dynamics (30% of recent works), historical analyses of religious change (25%), and methodological innovation (20%). Most articles engage with contemporary religious movements through interdisciplinary lenses combining sociology, media studies, and philosophy.
Rota serves as Co-PI for the NFP80 project How Worldviews Shape Social Responsibility examining COVID-19 narratives, and holds the position of Treasurer for the International Association for the History of Religions. He maintains research affiliations with the University of Bern and participates in the 'Religion and Politics' research group.
