Andrea Roman-Alfaro is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminology at the University of New Mexico. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on the social structures shaping interpretations and experiences of violence, particularly among marginalized women. She examines violence's horizontal (private-public spaces) and vertical (individual-community-societal scales) dimensions. Her book project, At the Crosslines of Violence, explores how race, gender, and class intersect with violence in Peru's urban margins.
Combining scholarship with activism, Dr. Roman-Alfaro engages in community-driven social justice initiatives. She advocates for transformative engaged scholarship, collaborating with communities to address systemic inequities and foster equitable futures. Her work bridges academic research and grassroots advocacy, emphasizing the interconnectedness of material and cultural dimensions of violence.
