Andrea Musacchio

Andrea Musacchio is Director of the Department of Mechanistic Cell Biology at the Max Planck Institute for Molecular Physiology in Dortmund, Germany, and Honorary Full Professor at the University of Duisburg-Essen. Born in Rome in 1964, he holds a Biology degree from Tor Vergata University (summa cum laude) and a PhD in Biochemistry from EMBL/University of Heidelberg. His career includes postdoctoral research at Harvard Medical School and faculty positions at the European Institute of Oncology in Milan.

Musacchio's research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of cell division, with emphasis on kinetochore assembly, centromere organization, and mitotic spindle regulation. His lab combines biochemical reconstitution, structural biology (cryo-EM), and cell biology approaches to study protein complexes driving chromosome segregation.

His publications demonstrate consistent focus on mitotic regulation mechanisms, with recent work emphasizing structural characterization of kinetochore subcomplexes (CCAN, RZZ), centromere licensing, and checkpoint signaling. Key themes include protein-protein interactions, enzyme kinetics in cell cycle control, and epigenetic maintenance of centromeres.
