Andrea Lommen is the John Farnum Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Haverford College. Her research focuses on detecting gravitational waves using millisecond pulsars through the Pulsar Timing Array (PTA) method. She co-leads the NANOGrav collaboration, which announced the first detection of nanohertz gravitational waves in 2023. Lommen pioneered the use of NASA's NICER X-ray telescope aboard the ISS to achieve unprecedented timing precision in pulsar observations.
- Leading projects: NICER mission, Pulsar Timing Array
- Key collaborations: NANOGrav, International Pulsar Timing Array
Her work addresses challenges like interstellar medium delays and explores applications in space navigation. She mentors undergraduate researchers, including recent projects on cislunar navigation and black hole population studies. Lommen's teaching includes courses like Gravitational Waves and Waves and Optics, recognized as innovative at Haverford.
