Andrea Leverentz is a Professor of Sociology and Department Head in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at North Carolina State University. Her research focuses on community, crime, and incarceration, with particular attention to how place shapes reentry experiences and the intersection of gender, race, and criminal justice. She holds a PhD in Sociology from the University of Chicago, alongside MA and BA degrees from the University of Chicago and Tulane University, respectively.
Her key works include Intersecting Lives: How Place Shapes Reentry (2022) and The Ex-Prisoner’s Dilemma (2014), examining narratives of reentry for women. Current research explores tourist identities and crime narratives. She co-edited Beyond Recidivism (2020), advancing reentry research frameworks.
Research interests span reentry dynamics, carceral systems, urban sociology, and the social impacts of incarceration. Her work emphasizes marginalized groups, particularly Black women, and the systemic challenges faced during reintegration. Leverentz’s articles address topics like restorative justice in education, probation revocation, and spatial influences on community safety.
