Andrea Freeman is a Professor of Law at Southwestern Law School, specializing in the intersections of critical race theory with food policy, health, and consumer credit. She holds a B.A. in History from the University of Toronto and a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Her work focuses on systemic inequities in food systems and healthcare, as evidenced by her award-winning book Skimmed: Breastfeeding, Race, and Injustice (2019), now in documentary development, and her forthcoming Ruin Their Crops on the Ground (2024).
Freeman teaches Constitutional Law, Food Law, and Comparative Social Justice. She has held visiting positions at UC Berkeley, University of Denver, and Vermont Law School, and served as a Distinguished Scholar of Sustainable Agriculture. Her accolades include the 2015 Community Faculty of the Year Award and leadership roles in the AALS Constitutional Law and Agriculture & Food Law sections.
Freeman’s community engagement includes ACLU Hawaiʻi litigation work, co-chairing the Law and Society’s Critical Race Research Network, and founding the Academy of Food Law and Policy. Her research has been featured in Washington Post, New Yorker, and on NPR, alongside Fulbright-funded UK food inequality studies (2020–21).
