Anders Peter Andersen is a researcher at the Centre for Ocean Life, part of the National Institute of Aquatic Resources at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). He is actively involved in the DTU Microbes Initiative and conducts interdisciplinary research at the intersection of fluid dynamics and aquatic biology. His work explores fundamental questions about how microscopic organisms interact with their fluid environment.
His educational background includes a PhD from the Technical University of Denmark (1999–2002) and an M.Sc. in physics and chemistry from the University of Copenhagen (1993–1999). He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Cornell University, USA (2002–2005), and served as an Assistant Professor at DTU from 2006 to 2010.
Anders Peter Andersen's research focuses on biological fluid dynamics, particularly the hydrodynamics of planktonic organisms, microbial feeding, low Reynolds number swimming, and vortex generation. His work addresses how organisms like ciliates, flagellates, and barnacles manipulate fluid flows for feeding and locomotion. He employs both theoretical modeling and experimental techniques such as Particle Image Velocimetry.
The most recent publications (2022–2024) reveal a strong trend in understanding microbial feeding mechanisms, escape behaviors, and the physical principles governing microorganism-environment interactions. These studies often involve collaborations with biologists and physicists, appearing in journals like Journal of Experimental Biology and Physical Review Fluids.
He has been involved in several significant research projects, including 'The physics of microbial feeding: mechanisms and trade-offs' and 'Ecology and fluid dynamics of aquatic suspension feeding,' often in collaboration with Professor Thomas Kiørboe.
