Gjesvik's scholarly work demonstrates a clear trajectory examining how homosexuality has been portrayed in Norwegian media over decades. His research employs discourse analysis to understand power structures in media representation, documenting the evolution from negative stereotypes to more positive portrayals. He has made significant contributions to understanding how media narratives shape public perception of LGBTQ+ individuals in Norwegian society, with particular attention to historical context and narrative change.
His scientific output shows consistent thematic focus on media representation of homosexuality, with publications spanning academic articles, textbooks, and extensive dissemination activities. His work often examines specific historical periods (1950-1980s) while connecting to contemporary media representations.
Among his notable contributions is research on the influence of Swedish media on Norwegian portrayals of homosexuality, analysis of TV series impacts on public discourse, and historical examinations of media framing from "faceless villains" to "visible heroes."
Gjesvik maintains active public engagement through podcasts, seminars, and exhibitions. He has contributed significantly to public discourse around the 50th anniversary of the repeal of Norway's "homosexuality paragraph," participated in the "Masker og motstand" (Masks and Resistance) exhibition at the University of Oslo, and regularly presents at events like Skeive dager (Queer Days) and press freedom day seminars.
