Anastasya Astapova is an Associate Professor of Folklore Studies at the University of Tartu, affiliated with the Institute of Cultural Studies. Her research focuses on political folklore, conspiracy theories, migration, and integration in post-Soviet and Eastern European contexts. She holds a doctoral degree from the Russian Academy of Sciences and the University of Tartu, with postdoctoral work at Uppsala University. Astapova is a member of the Estonian Academy of Sciences and has taught internationally, including at the University of Belgrade, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and Stockholm University.
Her key research projects include the European COST Action 'Comparative Analysis of Conspiracy Theories' and the Estonian Research Council project PSG48 on belonging in Estonia. Major publications include Humor and Rumor in the Post-Soviet Authoritarian State (2021) and co-edited volumes on conspiracy theories in Eastern Europe and Nordic countries. Astapova’s work bridges folklore studies with sociopolitical analysis, examining issues like authoritarian regime dynamics, refugee integration through language clubs, and vernacular resistance narratives.
Her awards include Estonian Academy of Sciences membership. Astapova has contributed to journals such as Europe Asia Studies, Journal of Folklore Research, and Journal of American Folklore. She also serves on editorial boards and organizes international conferences.
