Dr. Anagha Kulkarni is a Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Computer Science at San Francisco State University (SFSU), part of the College of Science and Engineering. Her expertise spans Natural Language Processing (NLP), Machine Learning (ML), and Artificial Intelligence (AI), applied to public health, women’s health, STEM retention, and medical research. She holds a PhD in Language Technologies from Carnegie Mellon University, an MS in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota, Duluth, and a Bachelor’s in Computer Engineering from Government College of Engineering, Pune.
Dr. Kulkarni leads initiatives such as AI-STAARS, Gen-PINC, and gSTAR, aimed at enhancing diversity and retention in computing. These programs support students through scholarships, professional development, and industry partnerships. Her work is funded by NSF, NIH, Genentech Foundation, and others. Notable contributions include the QMOHI tool for evaluating online health information and the HVFQI web-app for pediatric visual impairment screening.
Her research emphasizes socially responsible computing, curriculum innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Recent grants include a $2M renewal for Gen-PINC and collaborations with organizations like SKERI and Genentech Inc. on biotechnology training programs. Dr. Kulkarni’s publications reflect her focus on AI applications in healthcare, education equity, and computational methods for biomedical challenges.
