Ana Valdivia is a Research Associate at the Department of War Studies, King's College London, working on the ERC-funded project 'SECURITY FLOWS' led by Professor Claudia Aradau. Her research focuses on the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI), power dynamics, and social justice, particularly examining how datafication technologies transform border security and migration governance through algorithmic systems.
- Education: BSc Mathematics (UPC), MSc Data Science and Computer Engineering (Universidad de Granada), PhD in Machine Learning and NLP (Universidad de Granada, 2019)
Research Interests: Ana investigates fairness and accountability in machine learning, data feminism, design justice, and the political implications of AI in algocratic systems. Her work critically analyzes how AI impacts oppressed communities and shapes future governance.
Scientific Contributions: Recent publications explore algorithmic fairness boundaries, sentiment analysis inconsistencies, and geographical disambiguation in social media. These studies reveal critical gaps in AI reliability and governance frameworks.
- Scientific Awards:
- Turing Post-Doctoral Enrichment Award (2022) for analyzing AI's relationship with social justice and climate change
Additional Roles: Former data scientist in the private sector, interdisciplinary collaborator with social scientists and legal experts, and member of the Algorights community advocating AI risk awareness. She contributes to the 'Jevon’s Paradox' blog on science-power dynamics.
