Sr. Ana María Pineda, R.S.M., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Religious Studies at Santa Clara University, affiliated with the Sisters of Mercy. She specializes in Hispanic theology, Salvadoran religious history, and social justice, particularly focusing on figures like Oscar Romero and Rutilio Grande. Her work emphasizes the communal and spiritual dimensions of Latiné Catholic identity.
Educated at Russell College (BA), Catholic Theological Union (MA), and the Pontifical University of Salamanca (Doctorate in Sacred Theology), she has been at SCU since 1997, pioneering the theology of Our Lady of Guadalupe in university curricula. She is the first Latina in her department.
Her research explores the legacy of martyrs like Romero and Grande, bridging theology and social justice. She has authored two books: *Romero and Grande: Companions on the Journey* and *Rutilio Grande: Legacy and Memory of a Jesuit Martyr*.
In 2024, she received the inaugural Encuentros Award from the U.S. bishops for her national contributions to Hispanic Catholic ministry. She has served on numerous boards, including the Bishops' Committee for Hispanic Affairs and the Louisville Institute, and was a founding member of the Hispanic Theological Initiative.
Her advocacy for Latiné Catholics is rooted in communal efforts, as highlighted in her statement: 'The communal reality is at the heart of who we are as Latinas/os.' She remains active in the Encuentro process, aiming to strengthen the Church’s engagement with Hispanic communities.
