Ana Gómez-Bravo is a Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies at the University of Washington. She specializes in Spanish Jews of the Middle Ages, with particular focus on conversos and Sephardic culture, and maintains an active research program investigating 15th-century Spanish literature and culture.
Her educational background includes a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. Her research interests encompass critical theory, cultural studies, food and culture studies, gender studies, and textual studies, with specific expertise in medieval Spanish literature, converso identity, and the cultural memory of Spanish Jews.
Gómez-Bravo's recent book Textual Agency: Writing Culture and Social Networks in Fifteenth-Century Spain (University of Toronto Press) examines the role of conversos in 15th-century Spanish culture and politics. Her ongoing work includes a book manuscript titled Feeding Race: Food Culture and Blood Purity in Inquisitorial Spain and Portugal, which explores how food choices shaped group identity and racial difference.
Her published articles demonstrate a consistent focus on 15th-century Spanish converso authors and their contributions to literature and culture, with particular attention to Antón de Montoro and Juan Álvarez Gato. These works analyze autobiographical memory, material poetics, and social identity in converso literature.
She teaches courses on Sephardic culture, relations among Muslims, Jews, and Christians in Spain, and food and culture, bringing her research expertise directly into the classroom. Additionally, she has created The Converso Cookbook, an educational resource featuring 15th-century Sephardi recipes.
