A certified speech-language pathologist with clinical experience in both the United States and Brazil, she teaches courses including Multicultural Issues in Speech-Language Pathology, Neurogenic Disorders, and Voice and Craniofacial Disorders. Her national leadership includes editorial roles for ASHA Special Interest Groups, board membership on ASHA’s Continuing Education and Multicultural Issues Boards, and service on multiple ASHA Convention Program Committees.
Dr. Harten’s international educational background comprises:
- Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin
- M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology from Eastern Michigan University
- M.S. in Cognitive Psychology from Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, Brazil
- B.A. in Speech-Language Pathology from Universidade Católica de Pernambuco, Brazil
Her research program emphasizes Scholarship of Teaching and Learning through innovative pedagogical methods like role-playing, alongside pioneering work in Multicultural and Global Issues within speech-language pathology. Clinical research focuses on neurogenic communication disorders (aphasia, TBI, dementia), voice/craniofacial conditions, and dysphagia—particularly in head/neck cancer contexts—with consistent integration of cultural competence frameworks across all domains.
Publication analysis reveals a clear trajectory toward international collaboration, exemplified by 2018’s “Across the universe of speech-language pathology” and 2016’s pluralistic education work. Earlier publications (2014-2010) establish foundational contributions to interprofessional education and role-playing methodology, demonstrating continuous bridging of academic theory with clinical practice across diverse populations.
Though no specific awards are documented, her professional impact is evidenced through sustained service in ASHA leadership capacities and editorial roles.
Dr. Harten actively shapes the profession through mentorship in ASHA’s STEP and MARC programs, guiding underrepresented students into speech-language pathology careers. Her grant-related contributions include reviewing for ASHA’s Multicultural Activities projects and Advancing Academic-Research Career (AARC) Award, supporting emerging researchers and diversity initiatives within the field.
