Dr. Amy Van Buren is an Assistant Professor of Teacher Education at Montreat College, affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Human Services. Her research focuses on the intersection of education and outdoor recreation, with expertise in educational leadership, resilience, and culturally relevant pedagogies.
Degrees:
- B.S. in Criminal Justice and Criminology, East Tennessee State University
- M.S. in Elementary Education, University of Tennessee-Knoxville
- Ed.D. in Educational Leadership, East Tennessee State University
Dr. Van Buren's research explores resilience in honors undergraduates through leadership programs and methodologies for assessing English language learners. She has presented extensively at state, national, and international conferences and authored a professional book for educators. Prior to joining Montreat College in 2023, she taught middle school English/language arts and social studies for 15 years and held teaching roles at Lenoir Rhyne University and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke.

Dr. Van Buren is currently working on a novel and enjoys cooking, outdoor activities, and traveling in her free time.
