Amy Rock is a Lecturer in the Department of Geography, Environment, and Spatial Analysis at Cal Poly Humboldt and serves as Director of the Geospatial Certificate Program under the College of Extended Education and Global Engagement. She holds a Ph.D. in Geography from Kent State University, an M.A. in Geography from Ohio University, and a B.G.S. in Architectural History from Ohio University. Her research focuses on community development, rural development, GIS, cartography, and participatory mapping.
Dr. Rock emphasizes community engagement in her teaching, encouraging students to critically examine issues like economic development, nonprofit roles, and spatial justice. She collaborates with local nonprofits to integrate geospatial tools into addressing contemporary challenges. Notable courses include GSP 101 (Geospatial Concepts), GSP 316 (Cartography), and GSP 416 (Advanced Cartography Design Seminar).
Her publications span community-based learning, GIS applications in policy analysis, and spatial patterns in Appalachia. While she has not been awarded specific scientific prizes, her work highlights applied geospatial practices in education and community partnerships.
