Dr. Amy Phelps is an Associate Professor of Practice in Statistics at Duquesne University’s Palumbo-Donahue School of Business. She oversees the undergraduate Business Analytics curriculum, emphasizing practical skill development through statistical software and service learning. Her work bridges academic instruction with real-world applications, particularly in healthcare.
Education: PhD in Biostatistics (University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health), MS in Statistics (Ohio State University), MS in Physiology (Ohio University), and BA in Mathematics (Ohio University).
Research focuses on two areas: 1) pedagogical strategies for teaching applied statistics to business students, including service-learning projects with local nonprofits, and 2) biostatistical collaborations with Magee Womens Hospital’s anesthesiology department, addressing maternal and neonatal outcomes in obstetric care. Specific topics include anesthesia techniques, pain management, and risk factors like periodontal disease in pre-term births.
Recognized with the Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2017-2018) and grants from The Hillman Foundation (2020-2021) and the Natalia Morone Pain Research Challenge (CTSI, University of Pittsburgh, 2017).
