Amy Mathers

Amy Mathers, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Pathology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. She holds leadership roles as Associate Director of Clinical Microbiology and Medical Director of Antimicrobial Stewardship, integrating clinical and research expertise in infectious diseases.

• Education: MD from Loyola Stritch School of Medicine (2002), Residency in Internal Medicine (Maine Medical Center, 2005), Chief Resident at University of Vermont (2006), and Infectious Diseases Fellowship at University of Virginia (2009).

Her research focuses on:

• Using whole genome sequencing to study mobile genetic elements linked to drug resistance
• Clinical microbiology detection of carbapenem resistance
• Applying rapid diagnostics to optimize antibiotic stewardship practices

She works in the Department of Pathology, contributing to clinical microbiology and antimicrobial susceptibility testing while advancing translational research in infectious diseases.
