Amy MacKrell

Amy MacKrell, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Mercy College of Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa, where she has taught since 2012. Her office is located in ACE-225, with appointments available by request. She holds multiple degrees including a PhD from the University of South Dakota, MSE from Drake University, MA from Oregon State University, and BA from Grand View College.

Her research explores literature as a tool for empathy development, particularly through medical humanities frameworks, and creative writing practices spanning fiction and poetry. This interdisciplinary work bridges literary analysis with healthcare education.

Honors include being named a Pushcart Prize Nominee in 2012 for her short story "Walk Fast, Look Worried." She maintains active memberships in multiple professional organizations including the Iowa Distance Learning Association, Associated Writing Programs, and National Council of Teachers of English.
