Dr. Amy-Jill Levine is the Rabbi Stanley M. Kessler Distinguished Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies at Hartford International University for Religion and Peace and Professor Emerita at Vanderbilt University. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, she was the first Jewish scholar to teach New Testament at Rome's Pontifical Biblical Institute. Her research focuses on Christian origins, Jewish-Christian relations, Second Temple Judaism, and feminist interpretations of scripture.
Dr. Levine has authored numerous influential works including The Misunderstood Jew: The Church and the Scandal of the Jewish Jesus, Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi, and co-edited The Jewish Annotated New Testament. She describes herself as an unorthodox member of an Orthodox synagogue who works to counter biblical interpretations that exclude and oppress.
Her honors include the 2023 Hubert Walter Award from the Archbishop of Canterbury, the inaugural Seelisberg Prize for Jewish-Christian Relations, and the Shevet Achim Award from the Council of Centers on Jewish-Christian Relations.
