Amy Hurst is an Associate Professor at New York University (NYU) with a joint appointment in the Occupational Therapy Department (Steinhardt School) and the Technology, Culture and Society Department (Tandon School of Engineering). She directs the Ability Project, an interdisciplinary research initiative exploring disability and technology. Her research focuses on accessibility challenges, novel assistive technologies, and empowering end-users to create DIY solutions through accessible digital fabrication tools.
Previously, she served as an Associate Professor of Human-Centered Computing at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) from 2010–2018, leading the HC PhD/MS programs (2016–2018) and participating in the Interactive Systems Research Center. She holds a PhD in Human-Computer Interaction from Carnegie Mellon University (2010) under advisors Scott Hudson and Jennifer Mankoff, and a BS in Computer Science from Georgia Tech, working with Thad Starner in the Contextual Computing Group.
