Amy Beth Cyphert

Amy Beth Cyphert is an Associate Professor at the West Virginia University College of Law, where she teaches courses on Artificial Intelligence and the Law, Civil Procedure, and Regulating Artificial Intelligence. A Morgantown native, she graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in 2001 as a Truman Scholar and earned her J.D. cum laude from Harvard Law School in 2005.

Professor Cyphert's research focuses on the intersection of artificial intelligence and law, with particular emphasis on generative AI's impact on legal practice, ethical considerations, and regulatory challenges. She has also written extensively about algorithmic decision-making in the criminal justice system, Title IX compliance, and privacy issues in educational settings. Her scholarship has been recognized with the Privacy Papers for Policymakers Award from the Future of Privacy Forum in 2021 for her work on machine-learning algorithms and online surveillance.

Her research reveals a consistent focus on how emerging technologies affect legal ethics, professional responsibility, and access to justice. She examines both the potential benefits of AI in closing the justice gap and the significant risks posed by algorithmic bias and the ethical challenges of AI-generated content in legal practice. She has developed and teaches specialized courses on AI and law, reflecting her expertise in this rapidly evolving field.
