Ammiel Alcalay is Professor of Hebrew at Queens College, CUNY, where he previously served as Department Chair (1995-1999). A recipient of the College Teaching Award, he holds a PhD from City University of New York. His interdisciplinary work spans poetry, translation, and cultural scholarship.
Research focuses on Sephardic literature (Hebrew and translated works), Middle Eastern/Mediterranean intellectual cultures, Balkan literatures, poetics, and translation theory. His scholarship bridges Hebrew/Jewish literature of the Middle East with Islamic and Levantine Arabic contexts, while his creative work includes poetry and prose.
Dr. Alcalay initiated the Human Rights at Queens Memorial Lectures Project and International Visiting Writers@Queens program to foster cross-cultural dialogue. He actively promotes interdisciplinary collaboration across campus disciplines.
