Amitava Bhattacharjee

Amitava Bhattacharjee is Professor of Astrophysical Sciences at Princeton University and Head of the Theory Department at Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. His research spans plasma physics, magnetic reconnection, and fusion energy, with extensive contributions to both theoretical and experimental plasma science. He directs the Princeton Center for Heliophysics and has held visiting positions globally.

His research focuses on fundamental plasma processes relevant to laboratory and astrophysical contexts, including magnetized turbulence and magnetic self-organization. Recent work explores advanced confinement concepts for fusion energy with applications to stellarator design and plasma stability.

Honors include Fellowship in the American Physical Society (1993), American Geophysical Union (2015), and the Basic Science Book Award from the International Academy of Astronautics (2007). He has also received Fulbright and James Van Allen research fellowships.
