Amitabh Basu is a Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics at Johns Hopkins University, with a secondary appointment in the Computer Science Department. He joined JHU in 2013 following a visiting assistant professorship at the University of California, Davis. His research focuses on optimization, discrete and combinatorial geometry, operations research, convex analysis, and their applications in data science and astronomy. He holds a PhD from Carnegie Mellon University’s Algorithms, Combinatorics, and Optimization (ACO) program (2010), a master’s from Stony Brook University (2006), and a bachelor’s from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (2004).
- Education:
- Bachelor's in Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Delhi (2004)
- Master's in Computer Science, Stony Brook University (2006)
- PhD in Algorithms, Combinatorics, and Optimization, Carnegie Mellon University (2010)
His work integrates techniques from convex geometry, functional analysis, and algebraic topology to advance mixed-integer optimization. Applications span operations research, astronomy, and data science. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers and serves on editorial boards for journals like Mathematics of Operations Research and SIAM Journal on Optimization.
