Amit Ray

Amit Ray serves as Associate Professor in the Department of English within the College of Liberal Arts at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), holding a BA from SUNY Buffalo and MA/PhD from the University of Michigan.

His research centers on colonial/postcolonial studies with specialized focus on British Colonialism in South Asia, examining globalization's uneven consequences through interdisciplinary frameworks integrating history, anthropology, and cultural studies. Current work investigates wikis' societal impact through literary theory, challenging traditional notions of authorship and expertise, with active research on agnotology (the study of culturally induced ignorance) connecting Parkinson's disease, herbicide misinformation, and digital media. Teaching emphasizes transnational cultural politics across courses like Literature and Cultural Studies, Text & Code, and Free & Open Source Culture.

Ray actively contributes to academic discourse through 2023-2025 publications including collaborative work in First Monday and presentations on GAI-agnotology intersections.

As a founding member of RIT's Lab for Social Computing since 2004, he leads research on social computing applications while advising capstone projects through SOIS-510. His scholarly approach consistently bridges literary analysis with digital culture studies, historical context, and critical theory frameworks including psychoanalysis, critical race studies, and postcolonial theory.
