Amit K. Chopra is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) in the School of Computing and Communications at Lancaster University. His research focuses on decentralized systems, multiagent systems, and software engineering, with particular interest in how autonomous agents can interact with maximal flexibility in sociotechnical settings where agents represent autonomous parties and their decisions have normative consequences.
Dr. Chopra has developed a unique approach called Interaction-Oriented Programming (IOP) that constitutes a foundation for flexible interactions between decentralized agents. This framework has evolved to include world-leading languages for modeling multiagent interactions, both in terms of normative meaning and interaction protocols, along with approaches for verifying them and programming models for implementing intelligent agents. His work challenges conventional wisdom in fields such as software engineering, distributed systems, programming languages, and business processes.
His research spans theoretical foundations to practical implementations, with applications in e-business, health, finance, and other domains. Recent publications show a strong focus on tools and frameworks including Fluid (social norms-based multiagent systems), Argus (programming with communication protocols), Kiko (programming agents to enact protocols), Mandrake (fault-tolerant decentralized applications), and Azorus (commitments over protocols for BDI agents).
