Dr. Amir Qamar is an Assistant Professor of Strategy and International Business at the Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham, where he also serves as Programme Director for the MSc International Business. His academic journey began with a BSc (Hons) in Economics from the same university in 2011, followed by an MSc in Economic Policy & International Business in 2012, a PGCERT in Advanced Research Methods and Skills in 2016, and culminating in a PhD in Management in 2018.
Amir's research interests lie at the intersection of strategy, operations, and international business, with a strong focus on lean and agile production strategies in the global automotive industry. He also investigates multiplier effects in supply chains, productivity, innovation, and the dynamics of multinational enterprises (MNEs). His work extends into the retail sector and regional economic policy, particularly through his ongoing collaboration with City-REDI, where he previously served as a Research Fellow.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on resilience, adaptability, and strategic trade-offs in manufacturing and supply chains, especially within the automotive sector. Themes include responses to disruption (e.g., post-COVID-19), circularity in automotive systems, and the financial resilience of regional manufacturing firms. His research often combines qualitative and empirical methods and contributes to journals such as Transportation Research Part E, Supply Chain Management: An International Journal, and Regional Studies.
Amir has received recognition for his doctoral work through the Midlands Excellence Organizational Improvement Doctoral Scholarship. He is an active member of the academic community, serving as an Officer for the Academy of International Business (AIB) Research Methods Shared Interest Group and as a reviewer for top journals including International Journal of Operations & Production Management and International Business Review.
He has taught modules such as MSc Environment of Business, MSc Issues in Management (Dubai), and MBA Implementing Strategy & Managing Change, reflecting his broad expertise in strategy and operations. He was the Lead Organiser for the Annual Strategy & International Business Symposium (ASIBS) from 2018 to 2020.
