Dr. Amir Fazlollahi is a Research Fellow at the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI), University of Queensland. His research focuses on advanced neuroimaging techniques, including quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM), MRI technology, and their applications in understanding neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis. He also investigates biomarkers of brain iron metabolism, cognitive decline, and vascular pathology. His work often integrates artificial intelligence for image analysis and clinical trial design.
Key areas of expertise include:
- Development of MRI-based tools for early disease detection
- Quantitative assessment of brain iron accumulation and its clinical implications
- Longitudinal studies of cognitive aging (e.g., AIBL and PISA cohorts)
- Clinical trials targeting neurodegenerative disease mechanisms (e.g., deferiprone for Alzheimer's)
Recent studies highlight contributions to:
- Improving structural MRI resolution for individualized dementia diagnosis
- Understanding the interplay of amyloid burden and cerebral blood flow in preclinical Alzheimer’s
- Automated lesion detection in neuroimaging data using machine learning
Dr. Fazlollahi collaborates widely with institutions such as the Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle (AIBL) Study and leads projects like the Prospective Imaging Study of Ageing (PISA), focusing on genetic, brain, and behavioral biomarkers of prodromal Alzheimer's disease.
