Amesh Adalja

Amesh Adalja is a Senior Scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Biological Sciences. He specializes in infectious diseases, pandemic preparedness, biosecurity, and critical care medicine. Dr. Adalja holds board certifications in internal medicine, emergency medicine, infectious diseases, and critical care medicine.

Education: MD from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine and BS in industrial management from Carnegie Mellon University. He completed fellowships in infectious diseases and critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, serving as chief fellow in the former. His residency in internal medicine and emergency medicine was at Allegheny General Hospital, where he was chief resident.

Research interests focus on emerging infectious diseases, biodefense strategies, and pandemic response systems. His work includes developing guidelines for mass casualty bioterrorism events and advising on nuclear disaster recovery. Dr. Adalja frequently contributes to media discussions on public health crises and has published in high-impact journals like the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA.

Scientific awards include Fellowships from the Infectious Diseases Society of America, American College of Physicians, and American College of Emergency Physicians. He has been deployed by the US Department of Health and Human Services to Haiti after the 2010 earthquake and participates in global health initiatives like AIDS Free Pittsburgh.

Advising and grants: Served on federal and state advisory committees for pandemic response, including the NCAA coronavirus advisory group and Pennsylvania House Health Committee.
