Amber Davis is a Research Associate at the Disability Health Research Center, Johns Hopkins University. A Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW-C) with over 7 years of clinical experience serving underserved communities, she employs an intersectional lens to support minoritized persons with disabilities. As a trauma-informed clinician scientist, her work addresses both micro-level culturally relevant interventions and macro-level systemic change to disrupt ableism and racism.
Dr. Davis's educational background includes:
- Bachelor of Science in Family Youth and Community Sciences, University of Florida
- Master of Social Work, Florida State University
- Doctor of Philosophy in Social Work, Howard University
She completed postdoctoral training as a T-32 scholar at the UC Davis MIND Institute and Johns Hopkins University.
Her research pioneers the centering of doubly marginalized transition-age youth and adults, particularly Black young adults with developmental disabilities and autism. She investigates cumulative adversities and intersectional resiliency factors to improve lifelong health outcomes, with emphasis on trauma, resilience, and social determinants of health within contexts of systemic racism and ableism. Her work bridges clinical practice, community engagement, and policy advocacy to advance disability justice.
Recent publications (2022-2023) reveal consistent focus on intersectionality in autism and disability among Black populations, examining critical issues including pandemic health disparities, Social Security policy impacts on transition-age youth, and race-autism dynamics in young adulthood. These studies demonstrate methodological diversity across public health, social work, and clinical psychology frameworks.
Dr. Davis has received significant recognition including:
- 2023 Best Conference Paper from the Society for Emerging Adulthood Conference
- 2023 Society for Prevention Research Travel Award

- 2021 INSAR Cultural Diversity Travel Award
- 2020 MIND Institute Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Research Award
- 2019 Yale Bouchet Honor Society Inductee
Her mentoring impact is evidenced by the 2022 ABRCMS award for a mentored student presentation. Research funding includes prestigious T-32 postdoctoral fellowships at UC Davis and Johns Hopkins, alongside the MIND Institute's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Research Award, supporting her work on autism in diverse populations.
