Amarjit Budhiraja is a Professor in the Department of Statistics and Operations Research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) and serves as Senior Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs. He holds a Ph.D. from UNC under Gopinath Kallianpur, with postdoctoral research at Iowa State University and Brown University. His research focuses on stochastic analysis, large deviations, stochastic control, and related fields. He co-authored the book *Analysis and Approximation of Rare Events* with Paul Dupuis.
- Affiliations: College of Arts and Sciences, UNC; Probability Group at UNC.
- Education: Ph.D. in Statistics (1994), UNC-Chapel Hill.
- Postdoc Mentors: Wolfgang Kliemann (Iowa State), Harold Kushner (Brown).
His research interests include large deviations theory, stochastic networks, stochastic partial differential equations, and random graphs. He has advised numerous Ph.D. students and postdoctoral fellows, contributing to advancements in stochastic processes and their applications.
Budhiraja’s work spans theoretical and applied stochastic systems, with emphasis on rare event analysis, ergodic control, and interacting particle systems. He is an Associate Editor for multiple journals, including *Mathematics of Operations Research* and *SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization*.
Advising & Grants: Supervised over 20 Ph.D. students and hosted postdocs from institutions like Stanford, Brown, and Georgia Tech. His grants and collaborations focus on stochastic modeling, queueing theory, and large deviations.
Labs/Teams: Engaged with interdisciplinary teams in stochastic analysis, particularly in applications to networks, molecular biology, and data science. Active in editorial roles and conference organization within probability and applied mathematics communities.
