Professor Amar Rangan is a leading academic in orthopaedic surgery with faculty appointments at the University of York and University of Oxford. He holds the Mary Kinross Trust and Royal College of Surgeons Chair in Surgical Trials and Health Sciences (jointly between Health Sciences and Hull York Medical School) and practices as a specialist shoulder surgeon at James Cook University Hospital. A Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, he leads a major NIHR-funded program in clinical effectiveness research for trauma and orthopaedic surgery. He currently serves as President of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society.
His research focuses on evidence-based surgical interventions through large multi-centre trials. Key projects include:

- UK FROST: Interventions for frozen shoulder
- HEALTH: Hip fracture management comparisons
- SCOOTT: Thumb arthritis treatments

He has received significant recognition including:

He is willing to supervise PhD students in musculoskeletal surgical research and leads the Trials and Statistics research group. His work has attracted substantial NIHR and commercial funding.
