Dr. Amanda Hohner is an Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering at Montana State University (MSU), affiliated with the Norm Asbjørnson College of Engineering. She previously worked at Washington State University (2016–2022). Her research focuses on wildfire impacts on water quality, drinking water treatment processes, and watershed disturbances. She holds a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Washington State University (2009), an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Colorado (2011), and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering (2016).
Her research combines field monitoring and lab experiments to address extreme weather effects on drinking water systems. Key areas include post-fire treatment challenges, pyrogenic organic matter characterization, and ecohydrological modeling. She collaborates with water utilities and agencies to inform decision-making and resiliency strategies.
Awards include the 2022 Outstanding Teacher Award, 2020 Best Paper Award (AWWA Water Science), and 2018 Exceptional Professor recognition. She leads the Water Quality and Drinking Water Treatment Lab, mentoring students in environmental engineering. Current students include Samanthi Wijerathna (Ph.D.), Jack Heneghan (M.S.), and Caroline Martin (M.S.).
Grants span USDA Forest Service, NSF, NASA, and USDA projects addressing wildfire threats to water security, microbial contamination, and pyrogenic organic matter. She teaches courses like Physical and Chemical Treatment Processes (EENV 341) and Water Treatment Process Design (EENV 562). Outreach includes mentoring student teams and promoting project-based learning in environmental curricula.
