Amanda Frisken

Dr. Amanda Frisken serves as Professor and Chair of the American Studies Department at the State University of New York at Old Westbury, within the School of Arts and Sciences. Her office is located in the New Academic Building, Room 3037.

Education includes:

• Ph.D. in History from Stony Brook University
• M.S. in History from Stony Brook University
• Graduate Certificate in Women’s Studies from Stony Brook University
• B.A. in History from McGill University

Her research examines the intersection of visual culture and journalism history, with particular focus on 19th-century America, gender representations, and social reform movements. She specializes in the Gilded Age and Progressive Era, analyzing how visual media shaped public discourse and political activism.

Publications consistently explore media representations of social justice issues, with recent works examining sensational journalism, anti-lynching imagery, and gender politics. Her scholarship demonstrates sustained engagement with how visual media both reflects and constructs social realities.
