Amanda Esquivel, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, within the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Her research focuses on Injury Biomechanics, Sport-Related Biomechanics, and Orthopedics, with emphasis on ACL injury prevention, wearable sensor technology, and human movement analysis.
Education:
- Ph.D., Biomedical Engineering, Wayne State University (2008)
- M.S., Biomedical Engineering, Wayne State University (2005)
- B.S.E., Industrial and Operations Engineering, University of Michigan (2001)
Research Interests: Her work explores injury mechanisms in sports, orthopedic biomechanics, and applications of wearable sensors to monitor joint kinematics. Recent studies address fatigue effects on dancer kinematics, IMU accuracy for knee angle estimation, and lacrosse headgear impact mitigation.
Grants & Awards: Secured NSF and industry grants for projects like MRI equipment acquisition and injury biomechanics research. Current NSF role as Program Director for Disability and Rehabilitation Engineering highlights her leadership in STEM policy.
Labs & Teams: Leads the Biodynamics Research Lab, focusing on translational biomechanics research with applications in sports safety and clinical medicine.
