Dr. Amanda C. Venta is an Associate Professor of Psychology at the University of Houston and Director of the Youth and Family Studies Lab. She holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Houston, with earlier degrees from Rice University (B.A.) and UH (M.A.). Her clinical and research focus centers on psychopathology development in youth, attachment security, and immigrant mental health, particularly among Central American adolescents. She is Adjunct Faculty at Baylor College of Medicine’s Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Venta has secured grants from NIMHD and NIMH, investigating topics like posttraumatic stress in immigrant youth and oxytocin’s role in social engagement.
Her research emphasizes culturally informed approaches to mental health, including trauma’s impact on immigrant families and antiracist clinical practices. She teaches courses on abnormal psychology, child interventions, and developmental psychopathology. Dr. Venta contributes to editorial boards for journals like Attachment and Human Development and Child Psychiatry and Human Development, and has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications. Her work bridges clinical practice and policy advocacy, addressing disparities in immigrant populations’ mental health.
Recent grants include NIMHD-funded studies on posttraumatic stress in Latino youth and NIMH projects exploring stereotype threat in police encounters and oxytocin’s effects. Her lab, the Youth and Family Studies Lab, focuses on resilience and adversity in diverse youth populations, integrating neurobiological and social factors. Dr. Venta advocates for evidence-based policies to support unaccompanied minors and marginalized communities, emphasizing the psychological toll of systemic inequities.
