Aman Ullah

Aman Ullah, PhD, is a Professor in the Department of Agricultural, Food & Nutritional Science at the University of Alberta, and currently serves as Associate Dean (Academic) in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences. His research focuses on utilizing lipids and proteins from renewable resources to develop sustainable biopolymers, bionanocomposites, and bio-based materials for applications in packaging, drug delivery, and environmental remediation. He leads the Utilization of Lipids - Polymers/Materials Chemistry Research Group, which emphasizes the conversion of agricultural byproducts (e.g., chicken feathers, spent hen lipids) into value-added materials.

Ullah holds a PhD from the University of Genova, Italy, and has conducted research at Southern Methodist University, USA. His work has been recognized with awards including the 2022 ASTech Award, 2021 Innovation Awards for lipid conversion technologies, and the 2018 ALES Research and Innovation Award. He teaches courses in renewable biomaterials, food chemistry, and cereal/oilseed processing.

His research group actively engages in interdisciplinary projects, including collaborations with industry partners to address challenges in biorefinery processes and water treatment. They prioritize sustainability, with a focus on reducing reliance on petrochemical plastics and enhancing environmental stewardship through material innovation.

Recent projects include developing keratin-based biosorbents for heavy metal removal, microwave-assisted lipid metathesis, and smart edible coatings for food preservation. Ullah also participates in the Land Reclamation International Graduate School (LRIGS) program, fostering global education in environmental science.
