Aman Chandra is an Honorary Visiting Fellow at the Vision and Eye Research Institute, affiliated with the School of Medicine at the University of Cambridge. He serves as a consultant ophthalmic and vitreoretinal surgeon at Mid & South Essex NHS Foundation Trust and Southend University Hospital. His clinical expertise spans retinal diseases, cataract surgery, and connective tissue disorders affecting the eye.
Chandra holds a PhD from University College London's Institute of Ophthalmology, where his thesis on 'Genetic Associations of Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachments & Ectopia lentis' earned the Syme Medal. His research focuses on retinal genetics and zonular diseases. He has secured over £100,000 in research grants and led multiple clinical trials internationally.
As an educator, he designs surgical training programs such as the Clues from the Cutter vitreoretinal surgery course and contributes to the Faculty of Surgical Trainers (Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh). His editorial roles include Section Editor for Eye and reviews for leading journals like IOVS and British Journal of Ophthalmology.
Chandra is actively involved in professional organizations, including the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and BEAVRS, where he developed the first annual research grant program. His teaching portfolio includes microsurgical skills training and global surgical education initiatives.
