Amalia Z. Dache is an associate professor in the Higher Education Division at the University of Pennsylvania’s College of Arts & Sciences. Her work centers postcolonial studies, AfroLatina/o/x identities, and urban geographies affecting educational access. A Cuban-American scholar and 1980s Mariel boatlift refugee, her research examines racial inequities in higher education systems globally, particularly in Cuba, South Africa, and the U.S. She leads the Project SHARPE database on higher education reparations and explores Cuban refugees’ educational histories through grants like the 2020 University Research Foundation award. Dr. Dache’s media engagements include MSNBC, NPR, and Gloria Estefan’s Red Table Talk, where she highlights Afro-Cuban activism and systemic racism. Her 2021 article in The Journal of Higher Education uses GIS to analyze barrio-to-college mobility, while her 2019 edited volume Rise Up! frames activism as education.
Research projects include a Philadelphia study mapping public housing residents’ educational pathways and a comparative analysis of Cuba’s racial democracy claims. Awards include the NAEd/Spencer Postdoctoral Fellowship (2020) and multiple grants from leading education foundations. Her work bridges academia and community advocacy, emphasizing marginalized voices in global education systems.
