Amalia Gastaldelli serves as an Adjunct Professor at the Diabetes Division of The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and leads the Cardiometabolic Risk Group at the Institute of Clinical Physiology, CNR, Pisa, Italy. She holds key leadership roles including Chair of the NAFLD Study Group (founded 2012), Chair of the EGIR Study Group (since 2018), and member of the EASL-EASD-EASO committee for European NAFLD clinical guidelines.
Her research centers on metabolic disease pathophysiology, with core focus areas:
- Glucose and lipid metabolism dysregulation in insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and NAFLD
- Environmental endocrine disruptor impacts (phthalates, bisphenol A)
- Translational human physiology using multi-omics and imaging
She directs major EU-funded initiatives including FP7-FLIP, H2020 EPOS, LITMUS, and SOPHIA projects. Her multidisciplinary team (physicians, biologists, engineers) employs stable isotope tracers, metabolomics/lipidomics, and advanced imaging (MRI/CT/PET) to study organ-specific metabolism. With over 300 publications and 28,700+ citations (H-index 76 Scopus), her work defines mechanistic understanding of metabolic disorders.
