Amal Miri

Amal Miri is a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Migration and Intercultural Studies (CeMIS) within the Department of Sociology at the University of Antwerp. She completed her PhD in Gender & Diversity at Ghent University, where she conducted extensive ethnographic research focusing on female family migrants in Flanders.

Her doctoral research examined migration trajectories, personal strengths, and experiences of female family migrants, with particular attention to motherhood, affective citizenship, and the gendered politics of migration. This two-year field study involved in-depth interviews, group discussions, and participatory research in Antwerp integration programs, engaging both migrant women across generations and institutional experts, social workers, and activists in the migration field.

Dr. Miri's research interests span gender and migration studies, with specialized expertise in affective citizenship, marriage migration, and integration policies among Moroccan women in Flanders. Her work employs feminist and postcolonial perspectives to analyze how migrant women navigate challenges related to motherhood, precarity, care, and integration within European migration frameworks.

Currently serving as co-promoter for the ReIncluGen project (2023-2025), she investigates gender empowerment through 'situated intersectionality,' collaborating with civil society organizations across Austria, Belgium, Italy, Poland, and Spain to develop co-creative approaches that address structural gender violence and promote inclusion for migrant women and girls.

Prior to her current position, Dr. Miri worked at ELLA, a civil society organization focused on gender, ethnic diversity, and migration, where she gained valuable experience conducting applied research that bridges academic insights with community and policy needs. She has also contributed to Horizon 2020 research on refugees' perceptions of migration to Europe and participated in developing Horizon Europe proposals on gender empowerment.
