Amal Amer is a Professor of Microbial Infection & Immunity at The Ohio State University, affiliated with the College of Medicine and the Department of Microbial Infection & Immunity. Her research focuses on innate immune responses to bacterial pathogens such as Legionella pneumophila and Burkholderia cenocepacia, with emphasis on autophagy, inflammasome activation, and host-pathogen interactions. She is a member of the Center for Microbial Interface Biology.
Research interests include:
- Macrophage biology and immune defense mechanisms
- Inflammasome regulation and pyroptosis
- Autophagy in pathogen clearance
- Caspase non-apoptotic functions
- Host-pathogen interaction dynamics
Key research trends from recent articles highlight:
- Mechanisms of inflammasome activation in bacterial infections
- Role of gasdermin D in viral pathogenesis
- Cytoskeletal dynamics in immune cell function
- Impact of CFTR modulators on macrophage dysfunction
Her work has contributed to understanding immune signaling pathways and cellular responses to pathogens, with implications for vaccine design and therapeutic strategies against infectious diseases.
