Alyssa Alexander is a Lecturer in the Department of Sociology within the Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from North Carolina State University (2021), an M.S. in Sociology from Brigham Young University (2017), and a B.S. in Sociology from Brigham Young University (2015).
Her research focuses on care work and inequality, the relationship between family structure and child/youth outcomes, military families, and comparative research across countries, particularly as it relates to care work and gender inequality. Her current work examines the intersection between work and family sociology, specifically the role of parenthood in shaping wages within nurturant care work across various dimensions including gender, race, and birth cohorts.
Dr. Alexander's publications span topics including family structure effects on educational attainment, cross-national gender ideology development, and the impact of family structure on childhood outcomes such as BMI and behavioral problems across the US, UK, and Germany. Her recent work includes comparative studies on family structure and youth gender ideologies in Germany and South Korea, as well as research on family structures, transitions, and child weight in the US and UK.
She has taught courses including Sociology of Family (SOCI 200) and Relationship Development (FMST 314) at UBC, continuing her teaching career that began with five semesters teaching Sociology of the Family at North Carolina State University as a graduate instructor.
