Alyson Young is a biocultural anthropologist and researcher at the University of Florida, affiliated with the Department of Health Outcomes & Biomedical Informatics (HOBI), the Institute for Child Health Policy (ICHP), and the Emerging Pathogens Institute (EPI). She is also a faculty affiliate of the Center for African Studies and the Center for Gender, Sexualities, and Women’s Studies Research.
- Education: Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Arizona (2008), MA and BA in Anthropology from Ohio State University (1999, 1997).
Research Focus: Dr. Young investigates social and structural factors contributing to environmental and maternal health disparities, with a focus on vulnerable populations in sub-Saharan Africa and the U.S. Her methodologies include ecosocial epidemiology, community-based participatory research, and implementation science.
Publication Trends: Her recent work addresses global health challenges such as cholera transmission, antibiotic use, and food insecurity, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches like One Health and biocultural frameworks.
Teaching: She has taught courses on anthropology, maternal health, and research methods, advocating for evidence-based education practices and person-centered teaching in public health.
