Alya Guseva is an Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies at Boston University. Her research focuses on economic sociology and medical sociology, with expertise in credit markets, biomedical markets, and surrogacy. She holds a PhD from the University of California, San Diego (2001).

Her work explores morality in market systems, analyzing how financial and biomedical markets shape societal structures. Key projects include studies on surrogacy in Ukraine/Russia/Kazakhstan, credit card market emergence in postcommunist states, and gender dynamics in family finance. She co-authored Plastic Money (2014) and is completing a book on surrogacy's moral and legal frameworks. Recent research examines scandals in surrogacy fields as lenses for understanding power struggles.
Teaching includes economic sociology and healthcare policy. She advises PhD students in these areas. Collaborations include work with Dilyara Ibragimova (Higher School of Economics) on Russian household finance.
