Professor Alpar Mehmet Ali is a distinguished astrophysicist affiliated with Sabancı University since 1999, where he also served as Director of the Foundations Development Program (2004–2010). Previously, he held professorships at Middle East Technical University (1990–1999) and conducted research at institutions including the University of Illinois, Princeton University, and Cambridge University. His research focuses on neutron star dynamics, accretion disk theory, and pulsar evolution. A TÜBA member since 1993, he has received major accolades including the TÜBİTAK-Third World Academy of Sciences Joint Science Prize (1992) and the Sedat Simavi Award (1988).
Education:
- B.S. in Physics, Middle East Technical University (1972, High Honours)
- Ph.D. in Physics, University of Cambridge (1977, supervised by P.W. Anderson)
Research interests span accretion disks, fallback disk evolution, neutron star superfluidity, and pulsar glitch mechanisms. His work bridges theoretical astrophysics and observational phenomena in compact objects. Over 70 peer-reviewed papers and 30 conference contributions reflect his prolific output.
Notable achievements include pioneering studies on millisecond pulsar formation, propeller mechanisms in young neutron stars, and the role of fallback disks in anomalous X-ray pulsars. He has held leadership roles in Turkish academic institutions and international societies like the European Astronomical Society.
